UNDERSTANDING CSCS CARDS

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) operates within the UK construction industry and issues cards to construction workers with the appropriate qualifications for their roles. A CSCS card is proof that the card holder is not only fully qualified in their construction trade but has passed the mandatory health and safety test as well. These days many of the major construction firms require their employees and contractors to own a CSCS card before they can work on site.

CSCS cards are crucial if you want to further your career in the construction trade. Here at DMR Training, we’ve helped many people access CSCS cards through our funded construction NVQs. Once you’ve got your CSCS card, you can access better work and enhance your career in construction.

GRANDFATHER RIGHTS AND CSCS CARDS

In December 2024, Grandfather rights will no longer apply to CSCS cards. This means that anyone who has previously got their CSCS card through Industry Accreditation will not be able to renew their CSCS card, unless they have the appropriate NVQ or SVQ. Over 60,000 construction workers got their CSCS card through Industry Accreditation – if you’re one of them, there are many available channels to help you continue your career.

Industry Accreditation (IA) or Grandfather Rights haven’t been used to give CSCS cards since 2010, but anyone who did get their CSCS card through this won’t be able to renew their card after December 2024. All CSCS cards that were issued this way will expire on 31st December, 2024 – and after this, they won’t be able to be renewed.

However, if you’re one of the 60,000 construction workers that need their qualification, don’t worry – you don’t have to go back to school! At DMR Training, we can provide onsite assessment so you can achieve your NVQ and get your CSCS card while you’re working. We also have funding available across England, so you could potentially get your construction NVQ for free. NVQs can take a couple of months to complete, so ideally, you should enrol as soon as possible to ensure you’re not left without a CSCS card.

Don’t leave it too late to get your NVQ, as after next year, you won’t be able to renew your CSCS card if you got it through Industry Accreditation. Getting your construction NVQ with us through our on-site assessment means that you will be able to continue in your career and keep your CSCS card.

For more information on the NVQs we provide to get you the CSCS card you need, check out all of our NVQs here, or get in contact with us today.
