How to Renew a CSCS Card

Construction site with a sunset

Right, you’ve been on-site for 5 years, and suddenly, your CSCS Card is almost up. Now you’re thinking to yourself, “Okay, what should I do now?”

Well, don’t worry, we’re going to tell you how to renew a CSCS Card, because as training providers, our main priority is ensuring you succeed, and honestly? It’s dead simple.

What you need

Here’s your shopping list, and don’t worry, it isn’t expensive:

  • Proof of your qualifications: Make sure you have copies of your construction NVQ or the equivalent of what your CSCS card is based on.
  • A passport photo: just as proof of your identity
  • A CITB Test Pass: The big one, but this pass has to be within the last two years, if it’s older than that, then you’ll have to sit through it again.

So there’s no going back to college, no redoing your construction NVQ, no starting from scratch.

How to actually do it

It’s common for a lot of people to think this is a huge task, but it’s just a matter of doing it, and it’s fairly simple

  1. Apply: Log in to the My CSCS app or CSCS Online and follow through its instructions.
  2. Wait a few days: Soon as it’s approved, the digital card’s in the app and most site managers take that now. The plastic one turns up in about five working days.

What if your card’s already run out?

Right, if you’re panicking about your CSCS Card running out, and your mind is scrambling, so we’re going to explain what happens next

You’ll get sent home. The big Tier-1 sites don’t mess about. They scan your card at induction on CSCS Smart Check, it comes up red, and you’re back in the van before you’ve had your brew, but don’t fret, we’ll let you know how to prevent this for the future

Smaller sites might let it slide, but only if you’ve booked your test. But this is very rare.

Your qualifications haven’t gone anywhere. This is the bit nobody tells you, and it’s the bit that matters. Your Construction NVQ doesn’t expire.

The only two things that run out are the card and your test pass. That’s the whole reason renewing’s quick and cheap instead of a nightmare.

So if your card’s gone, you haven’t lost your trade. You’ve lost your gate pass. Two very different things. And as long as you’re inside that 12-month window, you renew it exactly the way I’ve laid out above.

Left it longer than 12 months?

Then it’s a new application, not a renewal. But don’t worry it isn’t daunting.

CSCS keep your records on file, so that old certificates are still good. You’re basically sitting the test again and applying fresh. A bit more to it, but it’s not the end of the world.

Can I get a temporary CSCS Card?

This is something that trips people up a lot.

Yes, you can get a temporary CSCS card, but only for provisional, trainee, apprentice and experienced workers.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply for CSCS Cards that hasn’t lapsed.

It’s important for us to tell you this as the last thing we want is for you to waste your time.

So what’s next?

Look, it’s not complicated. Your card runs out, you sit the test, you upload your bits, you’re back on site. The only people who make a meal of it are the ones who ignore it till they’re standing at the gate getting turned away.

So don’t ignore it. Sort it while you’ve still got time on the clock, keep your old NVQ certificate somewhere you can actually find it, and get that reminder in your phone today. Future you, the one still earning a full week’s wage, will thank you for it.

And if you’re ever stuck on which card you need or you’ve left it too long, you know where we are.
