The CSCS Experienced Worker card is for construction workers with real time on the tools (normally at least one year in the last three) who have registered for a construction related NVQ at Level 2 or higher. It is valid for one year and cannot be renewed, and it keeps you working on site while you complete your qualification.
Finish the NVQ and you move on to the blue CSCS card, the five year Skilled Worker card for your trade.
Although it is not a legal requirement to hold a CSCS card on site, most contractors make one a condition of getting through the gate. If you have years of experience but nothing on paper, the experienced worker route is the fastest way to put that right.
To qualify for the card you need proof that you have registered for a relevant NVQ Level 2 or higher, and a pass on the touch screen test (the CITB health, safety and environment test) from the last two years.
Experienced construction workers with at least three years’ experience in their trade can take their NVQ with DMR Training via either the on-site assessment (OSAT) or Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPAR) routes.
The on-site assessment route takes around three to four months and involves building a portfolio of evidence to validate your level of skill and experience. OSAT requires at least one workplace observation carried out by your assessor, with no travelling involved.
The EWPAR route is an intensive one day assessment where you complete a set of tasks issued by your assessor using your own tools. You will need to attend a training centre to complete a fast-track NVQ.
Every applicant must have passed the CITB health, safety and environment test within the last two years. You can book it by calling 0344 994 4488 or through Pearson VUE. The test costs £22.50, and be wary of third party booking companies who charge a premium to book it on your behalf.

The card costs £36. Applications are made online through CSCS Online or the My CSCS app, and approved cards usually arrive within five working days.
