Why do I need an NVQ?
An NVQ qualification is recognition that you’ve reached a certain level of expertise in your trade, and also demonstrates your ability to work safely too. Together with a CSCS Card, your NVQ validates your skill and experience in the eyes of people who’ve never seen you work such as potential employers, site managers or new clients.
How it works
Gaining your NVQ via the on-site assessment and training route (OSAT) consists of two parts – knowledge and practical.
The practical side of the qualification involves building a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that your skills meet the requirements of the NVQ. Evidence can be obtained in several ways including on-site observations, photographs, witness testimonies, 1-to-1 professional discussions and copies of company documentation (e.g. site induction records, risk assessments etc). Your NVQ assessor will advise you on the best ways to collect this evidence.
The knowledge side of the qualification involves answering a series of questions relating to your specific trade and health & safety. These can be handwritten or typed on a word processor. Your assessor will be available by phone and email to provide support and guidance.
When all evidence has been collected, your assessor will submit your portfolio for verification. You will receive your NVQ certificate shortly after and can then apply for your CSCS Card.
Who should take this qualification?
Onsite NVQ assessment is for construction workers who meet the recognised occupational standards. The qualification is a validation of your skills and experience.
The Onsite Assessment and Training (OSAT) route allows you to achieve your NVQ through workplace assessment at your own speed.
This qualification is a mandatory requirement in gaining your CSCS Skilled Worker card.
To undertake a construction NVQ, you must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum of three years’ experience in your trade
- Must currently be working (either part-time or full-time)
- Aged 19+
Your assessor will check your eligibility before we sign you up to the qualification.
We deliver our construction NVQs through the Onsite Assessment (OSAT) route. We will assign you an NVQ assessor who will work with you for the duration of the course as you build a portfolio of evidence.
Types of evidence may include:
- An onsite observation while you work, carried out by your assessor in your workplace
- Photographs or videos of you working
- References, employer endorsements or witness testimonies verifying your work in construction
- Detailed job logs of work you have completed
- A recorded professional discussion with your assessor either face-to-face or over the telephone
- Coursework covering ‘theory’ and construction health and safety
Once your assessor is satisfied you have submitted sufficient evidence, our internal verification team will check your portfolio. They will then claim your NVQ certificate with the awarding body.
Although it can take up to six months or more to achieve their NVQ, we find that most complete Level 2 in two to three months, and Level 3 in three to four months.
Ultimately, the qualification will fit around your professional and personal commitments. Work towards it at a speed you feel comfortable.
