How to become a site supervisor. You’re usually promoted from the tools because you’re the one everybody already asks. To hold the role properly, you need two things. SSSTS (the Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme) and the Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision, which is the qualification behind the gold CSCS Supervisor card. The NVQ is assessed on site while you supervise. Pay follows the responsibility and the proof.
Okay, you want to become a site supervisor?
Most people don’t apply for the role. The staff already come to you. The gaffer notices, and one morning you’re standing there with the sign-in sheet and the site manager’s number in your phone.
Congrats mate, you’re now a supervisor.
Here’s the bit people tend to miss. You’re already doing the work. What you need is the piece of paper that proves it. Because sooner or later the client wants proof of competence.
The NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision sorts that. It’s quicker than you think and it’s built around what you do every day, not a classroom.
So this is how you become a site supervisor properly. Whether you’re the one stepping up or the firm doing the promoting, read on.
A site supervisor sits between the site manager and the rest of the gang. The manager runs the project, the supervisor runs the work. If it’s the manager’s job you’re after, our post on what site manager qualifications you need covers that end.
If that’s your week already, you’re a site supervisor whether or not anybody’s put it in writing. The rest of this post is about getting it in writing.
People search for a site supervisor course and a dozen things pop up. Only two of them matter.
That’s the Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme. It’s a two-day programme on health, safety, welfare and the supervisor’s legal responsibilities. It’s valid for five years and you refresh it with a one-day course.
The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision is the competence qualification for the role. It’s what CSCS wants to see behind the gold Supervisor card, and since Industry Accreditation closed on 31 December 2024, there’s no experience-only route to that card.
They do different jobs.
SSSTS proves you’ve been trained in safe supervision. The NVQ proves you can actually supervise, based on the evidence you’ve gathered on site.
This one is for the firms.
If you’re the one doing the promoting, do it in the right order. Book the SSSTS before they start supervising, not after. Get the NVQ started as soon as they’re doing the role, because the evidence builds while they work. Sort the HS&E test and the gold card application when the certificate lands.
Done that way, you’ve got a provable supervisor inside a year and nothing to explain on the next prequalification form.
It depends on how much evidence is already in your site records and how quickly the assessor can get to you.
Most supervisors finish comfortably inside a year, and many are quicker, because the diaries, briefings and inspections from the job you’re running are the evidence. You stay on site throughout, with no college days or exams.
If you’re the person the gang turns to and the only thing missing is the paper, or the firm that’s just promoted that person, ring us on 01942 673047.
We’ll tell you straight whether the NVQ Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision fits, how it runs around a live job, and whether funding’s likely. No hard sell.
