FAQs

Onsite NVQ assessment is for construction workers who meet the recognised occupational standards. The qualification is a validation of your skills and experience. The Onsite Assessment and Training (OSAT) route allows you to achieve your NVQ through workplace assessment at your own speed. This qualification is a mandatory requirement in gaining your CSCS Skilled Worker card.

An NVQ qualification is recognition that you’ve reached a certain level of expertise in your trade, and also demonstrates your ability to work safely too. Together with a CSCS Card, your NVQ validates your skill and experience in the eyes of people who’ve never seen you work such as potential employers, site managers or new clients. For insulation and retrofit workers and firms, NVQs demonstrate competency for PAS2035 and government-funded schemes such as Eco4.

We deliver our construction NVQs through the Onsite Assessment (OSAT) route. We will assign you an NVQ assessor who will work with you for the duration of the course as you build a portfolio of evidence documenting your skills and experience in your job.

Types of evidence may include:

  • An onsite observation while you work, carried out by your assessor in your workplace.
  • Photographs or videos of you working.
  • References, employer endorsements or witness testimonies verifying your work in construction.
  • Detailed job logs of work you have completed.
  • A recorded 1-to-1 professional discussion with your assessor either face-to-face or over the telephone.
  • Coursework covering ‘theory’ and construction health and safety.
  • Evidence of previous construction-related training and qualifications.
  • Company documentation (e.g. site induction records, risk assessments etc).

Your NVQ consists of two parts – knowledge and practice. The knowledge side of the qualification involves answering a series of questions relating to your specific trade and health & safety. These can be handwritten or typed on a word processor. Your assessor will be available by phone and email to provide support and guidance. If you have a learning difficulty such as dyslexia, your assessor will provide extra support with your knowledge questions.

When all evidence has been collected, your assessor will submit your portfolio for verification. You will receive your NVQ certificate shortly after and can then apply for your CSCS Card.

If you are ineligible for government support, we offer affordable self-funded assessment payable in four instalments of 25%.

Although it can take some learners up to six months or more to achieve their NVQ, we find that most complete Level 2 in two to three months, and Level 3 in three to four months. Ultimately, the qualification will fit around your professional and personal commitments. Work towards it at a speed you feel comfortable.

We’ve successfully delivered over 1000 NVQs in the last seven years. We offer excellent value for money compared to colleges and other training providers. The majority of our NVQ assessors have at least 10 years of experience in the industry. We work fast – we’ll aim to complete your level 2 NVQ in 8-12 weeks. We offer flexible payment. We won’t ask for the final 50% of the fee until you’ve finished the NVQ.
