Employer Spotlight: Easy Green Homes
One of the many insulation retrofit firms we work with is Bolton-based sustainable living specialist, Easy Green Homes.
Easy Green covers a wide range of energy-savings measures including gas fired condensing boilers, advanced heating controls, and home insulation improvements. Easy Green is one of hundreds of firms in the UK pushing the country towards more sustainable and energy efficient housing.
With five years’ experience already behind them, Easy Green operates within a high-growth domestic retrofit sector that forms a key part of the government’s carbon reduction strategy. The firm has grown quickly by attracting and training new workers in a sector with a severe skills shortage.
We teamed up with Easy Green in 2022 to help them achieve qualifications for their installers – something that was necessary for them to access government funding contracts like the ECO4 scheme. Through our flexible approach to onsite training and assessment, we supported three of their previously unqualified installers in gaining NVQs in Internal Wall, Cold Roof, and External Wall Insulation.
“The domestic energy industry has moved to a whole-house approach to insulation,” says Easy Green director, says Mirza Ummar Baig. “Companies need to be able to do every aspect of insulation. We’ve spent time making sure our team has the training and qualifications covering the full range of insulation we install”.
As with many companies providing domestic insulation services, Easy Green initially struggled to interpret industry regulations and compliance with the PAS2035 domestic retrofit standards.
“Sometimes regulations are unclear, especially the requirement for PAS2030 certification,” says Mirza.
Easy Green were referred to us by another insulation firm who’d benefitted from our onsite NVQ assessment programme. Following a brief discussion, we identified the Insulation & Building Treatments NVQ as the appropriate qualification for Easy Green installers. And as a bonus, we were also able to access government funding through the European Social Fund to cover the cost of delivering their qualifications. Until that point, Easy Green were not aware they were eligible for government support.
By achieving NVQ qualifications for their team, Easy Green were able to expand their range of opportunities for work including access to ECO4 – a government backed scheme designed to combat fuel poverty by prioritising energy improvements to the poorest households.
Having completed their qualifications, Mirza now feels his installers have increased confidence and satisfaction in their work and careers.
“DMR and their NVQ assessors were very supportive through the assessment and training process. They were always on hand when we needed help. We now have more knowledge of the industry and a better structure to how we work.”
