Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

The recognised health and safety qualification for people entering construction, and the training element of the CSCS Labourer card.

Who Should Take Health and Safety in a Construction Environment?

The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment is for people entering the UK construction sector who need recognised basic health and safety training. It is a regulated Level 1 qualification and it satisfies the training element of the CSCS Labourer card.

The course builds understanding of construction-site hazards, risk controls, manual handling, working at height, occupational health and plant safety.

You do not need to be employed in a construction trade, or to have any experience, to take this course. We will confirm the available groups, reasonable adjustments, teaching format and equipment needed when you enquire.

After passing all of the required assessment criteria, you receive the Level 1 Award certificate (qualification number 603/2371/1).

Entry Requirements for Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

There is no previous qualification or work experience requirement. Learners should:

  • Be aged 16 or over.
  • Be able to engage with the teaching and assessment in English, with appropriate approved support or adjustments if needed.
  • Have access to the online or centre-based assessment arrangements we confirm before booking.

A CSCS Labourer card application also requires a separate valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and meeting the current CSCS Labourer card rules.

How Is the Health and Safety in a Construction Environment Course Delivered?

We will agree a teaching timetable and provide classroom, blended or online learning, depending on the programme and the assessment arrangements. The qualification carries 30 hours of total qualification time, and we will confirm the taught delivery format.

You study risk assessment, health and safety responsibilities, accident prevention and working safely around site hazards. We will specify whether your route is classroom, blended or online.

Our trainers and assessors will explain the learning activities, the assessment conditions and the arrangements for additional support.

How Is the Health and Safety in a Construction Environment Award Assessed?

Assessment is either an online multiple-choice test or an assessment portfolio completed under controlled conditions. You are registered for one route, not both, and the pass conditions for the online test are confirmed at booking.

The portfolio route is completed under supervised classroom conditions. We will confirm which route your cohort is using before you start.

When all of the required criteria and quality assurance checks have been met, we will claim your certificate from the awarding organisation.

How Long Does Health and Safety in a Construction Environment Take?

This is a short course. The qualification carries 30 hours of total qualification time, which is not a compulsory 30-hour face-to-face class.

We will confirm the scheduled teaching and the test or portfolio arrangements, along with your cohort’s actual timetable, when you book.

Your Award and the CSCS Labourer Card

On achievement you receive a regulated Level 1 Award certificate, qualification number 603/2371/1.

Successful completion satisfies the training and qualification element for a CSCS Labourer card. The card itself requires a separate current pass in the correct CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and all of the CSCS application conditions. It is not issued automatically.

The qualification contains one mandatory unit: Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (D/616/3686), 3 credits, Level 1.

This Award is a knowledge and assessment route for basic site safety. It does not replace an occupational NVQ or the separate Health, Safety and Environment test required for the CSCS application.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The unit covers:

  • Understand the principles of risk assessment and how to work safely.
  • Understand the importance of safe manual handling.
  • Understand safe working at height.
  • Recognise occupational health risks in construction.
  • Understand safe working around plant and equipment.

Where the Health and Safety in a Construction Environment Award Leads

After this Award, you can seek entry-level construction work and apply for a CSCS Labourer card if you also meet the separate test and scheme conditions.

From there, the Level 1 Award in Construction Multiskills gives you hands-on experience of different trades, and once you are employed in a trade a Level 2 NVQ is the route to a skilled-worker card.

We can advise on construction trade training, a Level 2 occupational pathway and the correct future card route, and you can browse all our construction NVQs.
