Level 1 Award in Construction Multiskills

A hands-on introduction to construction trades for people new to the industry. No experience or job needed.

Who Should Take Construction Multiskills?

The Level 1 Award in Construction Multiskills is for people new to construction, including unemployed adults exploring trades, school leavers and career changers. It is a regulated Level 1 qualification.

The course introduces practical skills from different construction trades alongside essential safe working practices. It is a first step towards further trade-specific training, and a good way to find out which trade suits you before committing to it.

You do not need to be employed in a construction trade, or to have any experience, to take this course. We will confirm the available groups, reasonable adjustments, teaching format and equipment needed when you enquire.

After passing all of the required assessment criteria, you receive the Level 1 Award certificate (qualification number 603/5764/2).

Entry Requirements for Construction Multiskills

There is no previous qualification or work experience requirement. Learners should:

  • Meet the published age criteria of 14 and over, subject to the cohort and funding criteria that apply.
  • Be able to engage with the teaching and assessment in English, with appropriate approved support or adjustments if needed.
  • Attend the training venue and take part safely in supervised practical tasks using the required PPE and equipment.

No occupational experience is required. We will complete an initial assessment and make sure the two practical trades are suitable for you.

How Is the Construction Multiskills Course Delivered?

We will agree a teaching timetable and provide classroom and supervised practical workshop learning, with access to tools, materials and safety equipment. The qualification carries 110 hours of total qualification time.

You complete introductory taught activities and supervised workshop practice across at least two different construction trades. Tasks cover planning, material preparation, tool selection, safe working and basic practical outputs.

Our trainers and assessors will explain the learning activities, the assessment conditions and the arrangements for additional support.

How Is the Construction Multiskills Award Assessed?

Assessment is through two set practical tasks in different trades, the associated knowledge questions and an assessment of health and safety. There is no percentage pass mark. Both mandatory units and all of the relevant criteria must be achieved.

The Multiskills unit requires a minimum of two separate practical tasks in different trades, plus their knowledge questions, which can be written or oral. The Construction Health and Safety unit must also meet its own assessment criteria. Work is internally assessed and quality assured.

When all of the required criteria and quality assurance checks have been met, we will claim your certificate from the awarding organisation.

How Long Does Construction Multiskills Take?

We set a supervised practical timetable after confirming workshop access, the selected tasks and the cohort size. The qualification carries 110 hours of total qualification time, which is not a promise of 110 classroom hours.

We will confirm the delivery format and your cohort’s actual timetable when you book.

What You Receive After Construction Multiskills

On achievement you receive a regulated Level 1 Award certificate, qualification number 603/5764/2.

This Award is an introductory skills qualification. It does not, on its own, confer eligibility for a CSCS Labourer card or a skilled-worker card.

Construction Multiskills Cost & Funding

This course is aimed at people who are out of work or new to the industry, and funded places may be available depending on where you live, your age and your circumstances. Please visit our Funding & Grants page or get in touch for a funding assessment.

Course fees, employer contributions and public funding depend on location, cohort, age and eligibility. We will confirm all charges before enrolment.

What Construction Multiskills Covers

MANDATORY UNITS

There are two mandatory units, worth 11 credits in total:

  • Construction Health and Safety (F/618/0738), 5 credits, Level 1
  • Construction Multiskills (K/618/0734), 6 credits, Level 1

WHAT YOU WILL DO

For the Multiskills unit, you complete at least two set practical tasks in different trade areas, plus the associated written or verbal knowledge questions.

The Award provides foundation skills. It is not evidence of workplace occupational competence for a Level 2 NVQ and does not give a direct entitlement to a CSCS card.

Where the Construction Multiskills Award Leads

After this Award, you could move to a Level 1 Certificate or Diploma in Construction Multiskills, or choose a trade-specific Level 2 qualification where entry and practical opportunities allow.

A further step may be the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, a Level 2 construction training course or, once you are employed in a trade, a relevant NVQ.

We can advise on relevant training, apprenticeships and qualification pathways, and you can browse all our construction NVQs to see where each trade leads.

Common questions about the Construction Multiskills course

Frequently asked questions about DMR Training NVQ courses
What are the benefits of the Construction Multiskills Award?

It gives you a regulated Level 1 qualification, hands-on experience of at least two trades and the safe working basics every site expects. It is a recognised first step into construction for people with no experience, and it helps you decide which trade to pursue.

No. The course is designed for people new to construction, including those who are out of work, school leavers and career changers. There is no previous qualification or experience requirement.

Not on its own. The Award is an introductory skills qualification. A CSCS Labourer card needs the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment plus a current CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass, and a skilled-worker card needs an NVQ. We can advise on the right route after the course.

You will be taught and assessed by DMR trainers and assessors who are former construction workers. They explain the tasks, supervise the workshop practice and assess your work against the qualification criteria.

We provide full training to all our trainers and assessors in supporting people with a learning disability or dyslexia. Knowledge questions can be answered verbally rather than in writing, and we will agree any adjustments with you before you start.

The course combines classroom learning with supervised practical sessions in a workshop with tools, materials and safety equipment provided. We will confirm the venue, dates and what to bring when you book.

Funded places may be available depending on where you live, your age and your circumstances. Please get in touch for a funding assessment or visit our Funding & Grants page.

When your work has been assessed and checked by our internal quality assurance team, we will claim your certificate from the awarding organisation and forward it to you. This usually takes between two and four weeks.
