Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Domestic Retrofit
A short, funded knowledge course for people looking to get into the domestic retrofit and insulation sector. No trade experience needed.
Who Should Take the Understanding Domestic Retrofit Certificate?
The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Domestic Retrofit is for people who are out of work, or between jobs, and want a recognised qualification that opens the door to the domestic retrofit sector. It is a regulated knowledge qualification covering the principles of improving the energy performance of existing homes.
It also suits new entrants, insulation workers, building maintenance teams, site operatives and property professionals who need to understand how retrofit measures work together. The course explains the whole-house approach, fabric-first principles, the relevant standards, health and safety, the common retrofit measures and how quality is checked.
You do not need to be employed, and you do not need any retrofit experience, to take this knowledge-based qualification. It is a short, tutor-supported course rather than an on-site NVQ, so there is no workplace assessment and no portfolio of site evidence to build. We will confirm the delivery format and timetable when you enquire.
Once you have achieved all of the learning outcomes, you will receive the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Domestic Retrofit (qualification number 610/2654/2).
Entry Requirements for Understanding Domestic Retrofit
There is no prerequisite trade qualification and no work experience requirement for this course. Before enrolment you should:
- Be able to take part in the agreed teaching, learning and assessment activities. We will confirm age and funding eligibility with you.
- Be able to understand and communicate knowledge of the retrofit topics in English, with approved support or adjustments if required.
- Have access to the centre sessions or equipment needed for the delivery format agreed with us. A laptop or internet access is only needed if your course is delivered online.
Previous retrofit experience is helpful but not essential. This is a knowledge-only certificate and does not require a workplace practical assessment. We will discuss any learning support needs with you before you start.
How Is the Understanding Domestic Retrofit Course Delivered?
The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Domestic Retrofit contains 12 guided learning hours and 24 hours of total qualification time, which includes directed preparation and independent learning.
You will work through tutor-supported learning on domestic retrofit principles, insulation, airtightness, ventilation, regulatory requirements and safe installation planning. We will confirm whether your cohort is classroom-based, live online or blended, along with the dates and access arrangements.
You will have support from a named DMR tutor and assessor throughout. You can raise questions during the learning, and we will explain how your knowledge evidence will be collected and assessed.
How Is the Understanding Domestic Retrofit Certificate Assessed?
This is a knowledge-only qualification. There is no multiple-choice exam and no percentage pass mark. Evidence can be written answers, a recorded oral question-and-answer session or a recorded guided discussion, or a suitable combination. All of the required learning outcomes and criteria must be met.
Your assessor will agree the evidence method with you and review your answers against the qualification criteria. Spoken evidence must be recorded. We will confirm the arrangements for any additional assessment opportunity before enrolment.
When your evidence has been assessed and quality assured, we will claim your Level 2 Certificate from the awarding organisation.
How Long Does Understanding Domestic Retrofit Take?
The qualification contains 12 guided learning hours and 24 hours of total qualification time, so it is a short course rather than a months-long programme.
Your actual completion period depends on the delivery timetable, your independent preparation and how quickly you provide sufficient assessment evidence. We will confirm the dates and the expected finish date when you book.
What You Receive After Understanding Domestic Retrofit
Once all of the required learning outcomes have been achieved, you will receive the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Domestic Retrofit (qualification number 610/2654/2). There is no expiry date on the qualification.
Please note that this knowledge certificate does not by itself qualify you for a CSCS card and does not demonstrate workplace occupational competence. A CSCS card requires a separate qualifying route, such as an NVQ, and the relevant scheme requirements.

Where the Understanding Domestic Retrofit Certificate Leads
This qualification gives you a foundation for further technical training in insulation, energy efficiency and domestic retrofit. Once you are working in the sector you could progress to an occupational NVQ in insulation and building treatments, such as our NVQ Level 2 in Cavity Wall Insulation, or to more specialist retrofit training.
It does not on its own qualify you as a Retrofit Assessor, Retrofit Coordinator or competent retrofit installer. Those roles need other qualifications, skills and experience, and we can advise on the right route for you.
You can also browse all our Retrofit & Insulation courses to compare knowledge qualifications, NVQs and further specialist study.

Frequently Asked QUESTIONS
Common questions about the Understanding Domestic Retrofit course

What are the benefits of the Understanding Domestic Retrofit Certificate?
It gives you a regulated Level 2 qualification and a working understanding of how domestic retrofit is done properly, which is what insulation and retrofit employers are looking for in new entrants. It is a recognised first step into a growing sector without needing a job in it first.
Do I need to be working or have trade experience?
No. This course is designed for people who are out of work or new to the sector. There is no prerequisite qualification and no work experience requirement, and no workplace assessment is involved.
Is this an NVQ or will it get me a CSCS card?
No. This is a knowledge-only certificate, not an NVQ, and it does not on its own qualify you for a CSCS card. Once you are working in retrofit, an NVQ in insulation and building treatments is the route to a CSCS card, and we can advise on that.
Who will teach and assess me?
You will have a named DMR tutor and assessor who supports you through the learning, answers your questions and agrees how your knowledge evidence will be collected.
Can you provide support if I am dyslexic or have a learning disability?
We provide full training to all our tutors and assessors in supporting people with a learning disability or dyslexia. If you need extra support with the written elements, your assessor can use recorded spoken evidence instead and will draw up a plan tailored to your needs.
Where does the course take place?
Depending on your cohort, the course is delivered in the classroom, live online or as a blend of the two. We will confirm the format, dates and any access arrangements when you book.
Is funding available if I am unemployed?
Funded places may be available depending on where you live and your circumstances. Please get in touch for an individual funding assessment or visit our Funding & Grants page.
How long will it take to get my certificate?
When your evidence has been assessed and checked by our internal quality assurance team, we will claim your certificate from the awarding organisation and forward it to you. This usually takes between two and four weeks.
