How Long Does an NVQ Take? A Straight Answer on Onsite Assessment

How long does an NVQ Take

We get it.

You want your NVQ over and done with as fast as possible. After all, getting qualified shouldn’t be a hassle.

Which begs the question, how long does an NVQ take? Well, we’ve put thousands of NVQs through, so we know a thing or two.

And let me tell you, the ones that put the graft, listen to their assessor and don’t cancel their observation visits get the job done.

The ones that decide to leave their coursework pack in the van take much longer, and that’s the secret.

Here’s what to expect at each level.

How long does an NVQ Level 2 take?

Our courses tend to take 8 –12 weeks most of the time. At most, it’s about six months. Either way, there’s nothing wrong with it taking longer than usual. However, there’s also nothing wrong with it taking a lot less time than usual. It gets completed as quickly as you can respond, and that can be inside a few weeks if you really play ball.

The best thing about a construction NVQ is that there’s no waiting for the course to start, because guess what? There is no course, and you’ve already enrolled.

Basically, if you’re on the tools already, you’re already doing all the stuff a Construction NVQ asks for.

It’s all about building your portfolio, you can get a few photos, videos, ask your supervisor to give you a witness statement/testimony all as part of building that portfolio. Your assessor also comes out to watch you work if that’s the way you want to do it, but if you are fantastic at gathering evidence and put it on a plate for the assessor, it can be assessed that way, it’s that flexible to meet your needs.

After that, you’re right as rain.

How long does a Level 3 NVQ take?

This takes about three to four months usually.

There’s more to cover in a Level 3 NVQ than a Level 2 NVQ, so there’s more evidence to pull together.

But let’s put your worries down.

The process is exactly the same as your Level 2 NVQ.

The assessor comes to you, evidence comes from the work you’re already doing, evidence gathering as you go.

Supervision ones can be quicker, because if you’re supervising, you’re churning out evidence every day without thinking about it. Toolbox talks, briefings, timesheets, site paperwork, generally supervising others. It all counts.

Like most people on site, you‘re already doing the work.

What about Levels 6 and 7?

Now these are the big ones.

On average, it’s about three to six months.

Evidence is much different on this one as it’s all about programmes, budgets, and contract paperwork rather than something you can take a quick pic of during a quiet Tuesday afternoon.

Same rule applies though. Get your paperwork together early and it moves a lot faster.

What actually sets the pace

We’re gonna be straight with you here.

Getting you lot qualified as quickly as possible is our biggest priority.

We know the score, our assessors have spent years in the industry themselves, so they know the ins and outs like the back of their hand.

They know what a working week looks like, they know site plans change at short notice, and they’ll fit the assessment around your job instead of expecting you to drop everything for them.

But that pace is set by you, so follow these three things, and you’ll qualified in a flash

  1. They put the work in. The evidence gathering ain’t hard, in fact, you’ve been doing it all this time. But it won’t fill itself in. All you need is a brew and an hour to spare. Get this done twice a week, then you’re golden.
  2. Listen to your assessor. Your assessor knows what’s what. Taking their advice on the photos, work documents and nothing gets sent back.
  3. Keep your observation visits. Remember to book these in your diary, we’ll work around you! And if something comes up, it’s no biggie, just remember to reschedule.
