NVQ LEVEL 2 – DAMAGE REPAIR AND RESURFACING

The NVQ Level 2 in Damage Repair and Resurfacing course is for experienced damage repair operatives who meet the recognised occupational standards. This qualification validates the skills and experience you have picked up during your career.

The full title of the qualification is NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Associated Industrial Services Occupations – Damage Repair and Resurfacing. There are four pathways within the Associated Industrial Services Occupations NVQ. They are:
- Pathway 1 – Water Jetting
- Pathway 2 – Facade Preservation
- Pathway 3 – Damage Repair and Resurfacing
- Pathway 4 – Protective Component Installation
The information on this page is for pathway three (Damage Repair and Resurfacing).
This NVQ is suitable for damage repair operatives and ‘magic men’ who specialise in repairing damaged surfaces, substrates and pre-finished doors and windows. You may specialise in a specific area or have experience across a range of repair jobs. They include:
- Plastic uPVC window frames.
- Aluminium and steel powder-coated frames.
- Enamel on cast-iron baths and fibreglass baths.
- Chipped and scratched wooden doors.
- Ceramic tiles.
- Marble and granite worktops in kitchens and bathrooms.
Most damage repair operatives who take this NVQ work on New Build construction sites in homes and apartments and are called upon to repair defects and damage identified during the snagging inspection.
We deliver the Damage Repair and Resurfacing NVQ through the Onsite Assessment and Training (OSAT) route. This method of assessment enables you to work towards the NVQ at a speed you are comfortable with. It is a workplace and evidence-based qualification; classroom learning is rarely required. You will not need to take time off work to achieve this qualification, and travel is not required. Once you have achieved the NVQ and received your certificate, you can apply for your blue CSCS card (Skilled Worker card). The blue card is renewable every five years.
To undertake a Damage Repair and Resurfacing NVQ, you must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum of three years experience in damage repair and resurfacing (the three years can be reduced slightly if you have previous construction experience in another trade such as joinery or painting & decorating).
- Must currently be working as a damage repair operative.
- Aged 19+.
Your NVQ assessor will carry out a pre-enrolment skills diagnostic in a number of the job requirements listed below to ensure you have enough experience to achieve the qualification. It is not an exhaustive list and is designed to illustrate some of the critical areas of experience needed to achieve the Damage Repair and Resurfacing NVQ.
- Interpreting and extracting information from job specifications and drawings.
- Use of correct PPE equipment (for example, safety glasses, boiler suit and respiratory protection when re-enamelling a bath in a confined space).
- Assessing damage and determining materials and fillers required for the job.
- Knowledge of the RAL colour chart and ability to accurately mix shades when needed.
- Masking up and protecting a work area.
- Sanding down.
- Applying fillers meticulously.
- Applying paint and blending into existing surface or substrate.
- Painting grain on doors and applying lacquer to seal it in.
- Disposing of waste and complying with environmental requirements.
- Working safely at all times including proper use of tools.
We will assign you an experienced assessor at the start of your NVQ Level 2 in Damage Repair and Resurfacing to support you throughout the qualification as you build a portfolio of work-based evidence. It is your assessor’s job to cross-reference your evidence against the units of the NVQ.
Types of evidence may include:
- An onsite observation while you work, carried out by your assessor in your workplace. This involves little more than your assessor watching you work. He may also ask questions about why you are working in a certain way.
- Photographs or videos of you working. Your assessor will instruct you on the best way to capture photographic evidence.
- References, employer endorsements or witness testimonies verifying your work as a damage repair operative. Although recent testimonies are preferred, you can supply references dating back several years.
- Detailed job logs of work you have completed during your Damage Repair NVQ.
- A recorded professional discussion with your assessor either face-to-face or over the telephone using a digital voice recorder. For example, suppose your assessor is unable to observe you safely disposing of waste after a repair job. In that case, he may ask you to engage in a professional discussion about how you safely dispose of toxic materials.
- A Q&A pack covering the ‘theory’ of Damage Repair. There are a number of questions for each of the six units in the NVQ. You can handwrite your answers, type them up on a computer or laptop, or submit them verbally on a digital voice recorder.
Along with the damage repair and resurfacing skills listed in ‘Entry Requirements’, you will need to provide evidence of health and safety awareness and its application in a construction environment. This is especially important in a high-risk industry like construction. Health and safety awareness includes:
- Understanding rules and regulations to which you must adhere.
- Knowing how to correctly report accidents, emergencies and spills.
- Proper use of PPE.
- Lifting, moving and handling heavy objects.
Once your assessor is satisfied that your portfolio of evidence covers the entire range of NVQ units, our internal verification team will check it before applying for your certificate with NOCN (awarding body).
Although damage repair and resurfacing operatives can take up to six months or more to achieve their NVQ, we find that most complete the qualification in 2 to 3 months.
Ultimately, the qualification will fit around your professional and personal commitments. Work towards it at a speed you feel comfortable.
On completion of your Damage Repair and Resurfacing NVQ course, you can apply for your Skilled Worker card (blue card).
If you require a CSCS card while you are working towards your NVQ, you can apply for your temporary Experienced Worker card (red card).
All CSCS card applicants must first pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (HS&E test).

ADDITIONAL UNITS
There are no optional or additional unit requirements with this qualification.
After achieving Level 2 and depending on your experience, you may have the option to advance to NVQ Level 3 in a similar occupational area or NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision.
When you decide to proceed with your NVQ, we will carry out a quick skills diagnostic to confirm your suitability for the qualification and the onsite assessment route.

Before starting your qualification, an assessor will be assigned to work with you and provide ongoing support.
DMR assessors are former construction workers with at least five years’ experience in NVQ assessment.
They hold an A1 or TAQA assessor’s qualification, a minimum of NVQ Level 2 in their occupational area and a blue or gold CSCS card.
We provide full training to all our assessors in supporting people with dyslexia or learning disabilities. If you need extra support and guidance with the written elements of your NVQ, your assessor will draw up an assessment plan tailored to your needs.
An NVQ is a workplace competency qualification. As a competent damage repair operative, you will be expected to document your skills and experience through various types of ‘evidence’.
Your assessor will carry out at least one observation in your place of work. You will also complete coursework in your own time.
To achieve your qualification, you will not need to travel, there are no exams to sit, and you will not need to take time off work. Your assessor will provide support and guidance face-to-face, by phone and by email.
CITB-registered employers can claim a grant of £600 for every employee or contractor who completes an NVQ Level 2 to 7. You can find more information on the CITB website.

When you have completed your NVQ portfolio, our internal verification team will check it for compliance. They will then claim your certificate with NOCN. Once we have received your certificate from the awarding body, we will forward it to you by recorded delivery. This process usually takes between two and four weeks.
To get your CSCS Skilled Worker card, you will also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test at your local test centre.
You can apply for your card by visiting www.cscs.uk.com/applying-for-cards. You will need to upload a copy of your NVQ certificate and have a debit or credit card ready to pay the £36 fee.
Yes, if you need a CSCS card while you are doing your damage repair qualification, you can apply for the Experienced Worker card. You can request this card as soon as we have enrolled you on the NVQ (you will also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test).
To apply for the temporary card, we will email you your proof of enrolment which you must submit to CSCS.
You will then upgrade to the Skilled Worker card once you have finished the qualification.
