DAVID GETS HIS GOLD CARD - NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision

Groundworker and supervisor David Anderson has been working in civil engineering for 35 years – and when he decided to transition into an office role, he came to DMR.

We recently helped groundworker and construction supervisor, David Anderson, achieve his NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision.
Ā
On a sunny May morning, we met up with David in Salford to interview him about his experience doing his supervisor’s NVQ and securing his CSCS gold supervisors card! Congratulations David – check out the full interview below!

TRANSCRIPT:

Hello, my name is David Anderson, and I work for Chandos Civil Engineering.

Iā€™ve been doing civil engineering now, or working for civil engineering firms for over 35 years.

When I first left school, I did an apprenticeship for five years with Stockport council as grounds maintenance.Ā

Then after that, I started on building sites and I steadily progressed doing different NVQs, such as an NVQ Level 2 and doing all my plant and machinery NVQs. Iā€™m getting a bit older now, I thought itā€™d be a bit better to get into a more supervisory role so there would be less physical demand on my body!

Iā€™ve taken the NVQ Level 3 with DMR to hopefully facilitate that and improve my chances of getting a more office based job.Ā

When I made contact with DMR, from the very outset everybody was nice and informative – they checked everything out for me as well as the funding with the local council. Luckily enough, I was able to get full funding so it didnā€™t cost me anything!

Within a couple of weeks of me signing up, theyā€™d already sorted out my assessor, a gentleman called Ryan. He made contact with me and started the process of working through the Level 3 NVQ. Ryan came out to see me on-site and we talked through the process, and what evidence I would need to be able to get my gold CSCS card.

When he came out he assessed what I was about, how I operated and how I spoke to all the other men on-site, as well as how I did toolbox talks. We kept in touch via email and WhatsApp, where Iā€™d upload evidence to him of what Iā€™d been up to. He was there to support me with whatever evidence I needed to collect, to form a package to prove I was up to the job to complete the NVQ.Ā

Anybody who is thinking of doing the NVQ, I would say – do it! Iā€™m not the best at school and stuff like that, but itā€™s nothing to be afraid of. When we did make contact with Ryan, and any contact I had with him, if there was a problem with reading, writing, or spelling – we did everything through a microphone! It took the pressure off having to remember spellings and how to put stuff down in the written form. The good thing was that they were very understanding in that respect.Ā

In my day-to-day role now, since passing the course, I am more supervisory and I now have an apprentice. Instead of me being more physical, itā€™s the younger guys instead and Iā€™m directing them. I make sure that they do everything in accordance with health and safety, and get the best out of them for the firm.Ā

I think the NVQ is going to help me because it will give me more job security and more options in the future, for different roles within the industry. Itā€™s making me a lot more content, and Iā€™m looking forward to my future in the construction industry!

David’s NVQ was fully funded through the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Adult Skills Level 3 Targeted Offer.
