If you’ve read other entries in this blog, you’ll know that DMR is launching a traineeship programme for young people in Greater Manchester, Wigan and Leigh. But not everyone knows what a traineeship is. How is it different from an apprenticeship? What does it involve? We’ve put together some answers to your FAQs.
What is a Traineeship?
A traineeship combines work experience with classroom learning. You’ll gain valuable career skills such as CV writing, interview techniques, functional skills and health & safety awareness whilst expanding your experience in the world of work. You can think of a traineeship as a gateway into work or an apprenticeship. If you’re eager and motivated but don’t yet have the skills or experience, a traineeship could be the perfect choice for you.
So I can do an apprenticeship after finishing a traineeship?
Yes, of course. Progression to an apprenticeship is a big part of the traineeship program. If you previously applied for an apprenticeship but were unsuccessful, a traineeship will massively enhance your chances second time around.
Which industries can I gain work experience in?
Any! That’s the beauty of a traineeship; it provides you with the opportunity to sample work in an area that interests you before committing to a full-blown apprenticeship. And don’t forget: you’ll also acquire employability skills that you can rely on for life, no matter which career path you take.
How long does it last?
A traineeship can last anywhere from six weeks to six months depending on your needs and the requirements of your employer.
Do I get a qualification?
You’ll gain employability, health & safety and functional skills qualifications which are recognised by employers.
Can I apply to do a traineeship?
If you’re aged 16-24, unemployed, motivated and looking for a route into an apprenticeship or work, you’re welcome to apply!
Does it cost anything?
Traineeships are funded by the government. Day-to-day costs such as travel expenses and meals are usually covered by your employer or training provider.
