Dominik Juggles Work and Assessment to Gain His Funded NVQ
We’ve helped over 100 construction workers gain their government funded NVQs over the last few months but we’re certain that Dominik Wujek is the only flame juggler among them!
Twenty-seven-year-old Dominik recently achieved his NVQ Level 2 in Painting & Decorating after a three month assessment programme that was funded by the European Social Fund.
Juggler and Sound Technician to Painter & Decorator
The road to painting and decorating proficiency has taken a few interesting and unusual detours for Dominik. Before entering the UK construction industry, Dominik worked as a sound and stage technician as well as managing two departments in a large music store in his native Poland. He also had a period working as a juggling instructor at a children’s summer camp.
“I’ve always liked working with my hands and doing practical work,” says Dominik. “My grandfather had a soft drinks company and when I was a child I used to strip the drinks pallets and build dens. My father also works in construction.”
Getting into Construction
Dominik arrived in the UK in 2014, quickly mastered the English language and immersed himself in British life. He initially found work as a construction labourer and soon progressed to painting and decorating. “I’ve always been interested in interior design and the pay was much better as a painter,” explains Dominik.
NVQ and CSCS card
Having worked as a painter for four years, Dominik knew it was essential that he gain an NVQ through onsite assessment and then apply for his CSCS card.
“You don’t need to be qualified to do a good job. But when you’re qualified, people will have more faith in you” says Dominik. “Having the NVQ will help me look more professional, especially if I start my own business, and the CSCS card will help me get more work”.
Dominik’s NVQ assessment included two onsite observations of Dominik painting the interior of a school and church hall. He also gathered work based evidence such as job logs and completed a pack of knowledge questions.
“I enjoyed the process 100%”, says Dominik. “Steve, my assessor, was very helpful – a great guy. He explained everything in detail”.
Skills Support for the Workforce
Dominik’s NVQ was fully funded by the Skills Support for the Workforce programme which is part funded by the European Social Fund. Funding is still available for construction workers in Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Sheffield City Region. Contact us today to find out if you’re eligible.
