FAQs
When many people join the construction trade, they often ‘learn on the job.’ However, construction NVQs are benchmark qualifications that prove you can perform your occupational role. Grandfather rights are ending, meaning that construction workers will need to get their NVQ in construction to get their CSCS cards and gain access to more work. Construction NVQs are a fantastic way to further your career in construction, and here at DMR Training, we have access to construction NVQ funding throughout the country. This means that you could get your NVQ in construction fully-funded with us. However, if you’re not eligible for funding, we can help you get your NVQ affordably. For more information about our construction NVQs, get in touch with us.
For many construction workers, getting their NVQ in construction is well worth it. Once you have completed your construction NVQ, you can level up your CSCS Card, which helps you to get more work – and better pay. An NVQ in construction proves that you are competent in your occupational area, and allows employers to have trust in you as a construction worker. Many of our learners testify to how much getting their construction NVQ with us has positively changed their life. Once you have your construction NVQ, you will be able to see how much more you can do with your career. For more information about learners and what they think about getting an NVQ in construction, check out our blog that has many case studies from our learners, or read our testimonials page.

An NVQ in construction qualification recognises that you’ve reached a certain level of expertise in your trade and demonstrates your ability to work safely and efficiently. Together with a CSCS card, your construction NVQ validates your skill and experience in the eyes of people who’ve never seen you working, such as potential employers, site managers or new clients. For insulation installers and firms, construction NVQs demonstrate competency for PAS2035 and government-funded schemes such as Eco4.
Now that Grandfather Rights have ended, many construction workers will need to get a construction NVQ before applying for a CSCS card. You can find out more about this over at the CSCS website. However, getting a construction NVQ can be flexible and quick with DMR – we provide on-site assessment and learner support to help all of our learners. An NVQ in construction could open doors for you in your career, and we can help you get to where you want to be.
We deliver our construction NVQs through the Onsite Assessment (OSAT) route. We will assign you an NVQ assessor who will work with you for the duration of the course as you build a portfolio of evidence documenting your skills and experience in your job.
Types of evidence may include:
- An onsite observation while you work, carried out by your assessor in your workplace.
- Photographs or videos of you working.
- References, employer endorsements or witness testimonies verifying your work in construction.
- Detailed job logs of work you have completed.
- A recorded 1-to-1 professional discussion with your assessor either face-to-face or over the telephone.
- Coursework covering ‘theory’ and construction health and safety.
- Evidence of previous construction-related training and qualifications.
- Company documentation (e.g. site induction records, risk assessments etc).
Your construction NVQ consists of two parts – knowledge and practice. The knowledge side of the qualification involves answering a series of questions relating to your specific trade and health & safety. These can be handwritten or typed on a word processor. Your assessor will be available by phone and email to provide support and guidance. If you have a learning difficulty such as dyslexia, your assessor will provide extra support with your knowledge questions.
When all evidence has been collected, your assessor will submit your portfolio for verification. You will receive your construction NVQ certificate shortly after and can then apply for your CSCS Card.
Onsite construction NVQ assessment is for experienced construction workers who meet the recognised occupational standards. You’ll need to be at least 19 years old, currently employed (or self-employed) and have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in your trade.
We cover many different types of construction NVQs across a variety of different occupations, from bricklaying to insulation installers. Your NVQ in construction could help you gain access to more work and better pay – if this is something that you want, you should definitely consider getting a construction NVQ.
