CITB Test and CSCS Card: Frequently Asked Questions
The CITB test is a multiple choice test taken on a computer at an authorised test centre (it’s a bit like a construction industry version of a driving theory test). The purpose of the test is to ensure that all UK construction workers have a sufficient level of health and safety awareness before entering a construction site. There are four types of test – Labourers test, Operatives test, Supervisors test and Managerial/Professionals test. Always double check that you have booked the correct one.
The test is designed for anyone working, or wanting to work, in the UK construction industry. Whether you’re a labourer, skilled construction worker or site manager, the CITB test is one of the requirements for obtaining a CSCS card (for more information, take a look at our CSCS page, or visit the CSCS website.
All tests take 45 minutes and consist of 50 multiple choice questions.
Personal belongings are not permitted in the test room. Your local test centre will provide a secure locker for you to store your belongings while taking the test.
Within five minutes of finishing your test you’ll be handed a piece of paper informing you of whether you passed or failed. Your local test centre or the CITB do not provide analysis of your test so you won’t know which questions you got right or wrong.
Yes although we recommend waiting a couple of hours so the CITB can update their database with your test results. To apply for the card, call CSCS on 0344 994 4777. You’ll need your credit or debit card to pay the £30 card fee.
If you’re a skilled worker such as a joiner or bricklayer, you’ll need an NVQ Level 2 to apply for your CSCS Skilled Worker Card (blue card). DMR can help with this – please contact us on 01942 673047. Construction labourers will need to take the QCF Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment or the Site Safety Plus course to apply for the Labourer Card (green card).
