Leo Walters

Age: 17
Apprenticeship: Groundwork
Employer: Barton Civil Engineers

After leaving school, Leo spent a few months thinking about what he wanted to do next. A friend told him about the construction traineeship with DMR; he applied and got a place on the course. The traineeship quickly progressed to a groundwork apprenticeship with Barton Civil Engineers where Leo now works full time. Four days a month he attends DMR’s training academy in Leigh to complete his level 2 diploma and functional skills certificate.

LEO SAYS: “We mainly work on new builds doing drainage, concreting and footings. I really enjoy the work and I also like coming to DMR to do my diploma because the classes are small and more focused. After I’ve finished my apprenticeship, I’d like to work my way up to site manager”.

Jordan Newsome

Age: 20
Apprenticeship: Fitted Interiors
Employer: Planahome

Jordan had several aimless months after he left school where he didn’t really know what he wanted to do. After working a few menial jobs, he eventually gained a place on a construction traineeship with DMR which progressed to an apprenticeship in Fitted Interiors when a local furniture design firm agreed to take him on. With the support of DMR and his employer, Jordan went from strength to strength, and in 2016 he even featured in a Youtube video promoting traineeships!

Jordan SAYS: “The traineeship and apprenticeship helped me improve my communication skills, as well as my practical joinery skills. I enjoy my work and hopefully one day I’ll be able to start a business of my own.”

Josh Marshall

Age: 21
Apprenticeship: Site Joinery
Employer: DMR Training

Josh always wanted to get into construction because “it’s a hands-on job and keeps people active”. He enjoyed woodwork at school and decided that joinery was the natural career choice for him. He completed a level 1 joinery diploma at Wigan College but was unable to find an employer which temporarily stalled his joinery career. The Job Centre referred Josh for a construction traineeship with DMR, and we quickly noticed his talent and enthusiasm for joinery, offering him an in-house apprenticeship working for our maintenance firm. Josh grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Josh SAYS: “I really enjoyed doing my apprenticeship with DMR. I’ve received a lot of guidance from the very start, and I got to learn little tips and tricks of the trade. Overall, I feel like the apprenticeship really helped me with my confidence and organisation too.”

Jamie Bamford

Age: 23
Apprenticeship: Construction Operations (groundwork and paving)
Employer: John Taylor Drives and Patios

Before joining John Taylor Drives and Patios, Jamie tried his hand at several training programmes including a business course at college, an engineering apprenticeship and a welding apprenticeship. It wasn’t until he started working as a construction groundworker that his career began to take off. His employer arranged with DMR to start Jamie on an apprenticeship and two years later, he’s now fully qualified and running his own jobs!

Jamie SAYS: “DMR were very helpful. The atmosphere at the training centre was relaxed and there was always plenty of support available. Now that I’ve finished my apprenticeship, I just want to make some money, and enjoy life!”

Anas Elfar

Age: 18
Apprenticeship: Plastering
Employer: Alan Hadcroft Plastering & Coving Specialist

Anas initially signed up for sixth form college but decided it wasn’t for him. During an open evening at college he enrolled on a construction traineeship with DMR, and this progressed to a plastering apprenticeship with a local firm.

Anas SAYS: “I chose plastering because I wanted to do something practical – not sat in a classroom or office – and it’s something I thought I’d be good at. I’d say the most important personal skills I gained from the apprentice are confidence and team work.”
